Public Market, Balik Pulau, Penang

Public Market, Balik Pulau, Penang

Literally meaning “behind the Island”, this market typifies the architectural of a classo-modern market with a well-articulated distribution of space. The allocated stalls for the traders are very spacious, clean and comfortable for people to do their marketing. There are enough lighting due to the use of opposite situated windows which creates adequate cross ventilation and lighting for the customers and sellers. As the market is situated in the environs of a heritage community, the needs of the aged are provided for the old people to rest after their marketing.

A big and spacious corridor connects all the stalls enabling easy access to everywhere in the market. The norms of the community were not left out in the design of this market, halal and non-halal stalls are segregated reducing any conflict of interest. The external space of the building is occupied by a very simple landscape garden that link up the wet market with dry market and food court. There is a playground for the kids to play while in the market, a surau for the Muslim to pray and a food court for buyers and sellers.
